After an incredible 13-year investigation, Graham believes he has finally identified the last resting place of Alfred the Great, one of England’s most iconic kings.

However, Alfred was far more than a military leader. He believed that education and knowledge were essential to good government, and he worked to revive learning among his people. He promoted literacy, encouraged the translation of important works into Old English, reformed the legal system, and established a network of fortified towns known as burhs to protect his kingdom. His efforts helped lay the groundwork for the cultural and political development of England.
Alfred the Great is one of the most celebrated figures in British history, remembered as a warrior, reformer, scholar, and visionary ruler. Born in 849 AD, Alfred became King of Wessex in 871 during one of the most turbulent periods in Anglo-Saxon history, when Viking armies had conquered much of England and threatened to destroy the remaining independent kingdoms.
Alfred’s greatest achievement was his defence of Wessex against the Viking invasions. After suffering a major defeat and retreating into the Somerset marshes at Athelney, he reorganised his forces and returned to defeat the Viking leader Guthrum at the Battle of Edington in 878. This victory secured the survival of his kingdom and led to the creation of a peace agreement that divided England between Anglo-Saxon and Viking-controlled territories. Alfred’s resistance helped preserve the foundations from which a unified England would later emerge.
Alfred is also remembered as the only English monarch to be given the title “the Great”, a reflection of the lasting impact of his reign. His vision of a united, educated, and resilient kingdom made him a foundational figure in the story of England. More than a thousand years after his death in 899 AD, Alfred remains a symbol of leadership, determination, and the preservation of knowledge during one of Britain’s darkest periods.
